We, the Good Shepherd Sisters in Myanmar, joyfully celebrated 160 years of our presence in Myanmar (1866–2026) on 12 March 2026 in Yangon. This anniversary commemorates the historic arrival of the first Good Shepherd Sisters in Yangon on 8 February 1866, marking the beginning of our long journey of mission and service among the people of Myanmar.
Although the anniversary falls on 8 February, we celebrated it later due to the multidimensional crises currently affecting the country. Many of our sisters face difficulties in traveling from different communities, making it challenging for us to gather together. Despite these circumstances, we were grateful for the opportunity to come together in unity and thanksgiving, remembering God’s faithfulness throughout these 160 years of mission.
Over the years, we have continued to serve the people of Myanmar, especially women, girls, and vulnerable communities, through various ministries of compassion, empowerment, education, and pastoral care. As we reflected on our journey since 1866, we gave thanks for the countless lives that have been touched through the mission entrusted to us.
Our celebration on 12 March 2026 was also marked by another special blessing for our community: the installation of “Sr. Assumpta Shwe” as the new Local Leader of the Good Shepherd Sisters in Myanmar. Her installation on this significant anniversary day was a meaningful sign of renewal and hope for our community.
With this milestone, we believe that the “Good Shepherd Sisters in Myanmar” are entering a new chapter of our journey. As one Myanmar community, we move forward together with renewed commitment, trusting in God’s guidance and remaining faithful to our mission of compassion, reconciliation, and service to those most in need.
As we celebrate 160 years of presence in Myanmar, we give thanks for the past, embrace the present with courage, and look toward the future with hope as we continue our mission among the people of this land.
